12-8-23 at 7:30pm Mark Hummel. Tribute to James Cotton. Harmonica blowout! Song Theater, Columbiana, AL.
The iconic harmonica man James Cotton passed in 2017 at the age of 81. Cotton’s considered by most the last great harp titan of the generation that produced Little Walter (James replaced in Muddy Waters Band), Sonny Boy Williamson 2 (who raised Cotton from 12 yrs. old), Jr Wells, Big Walter and many more. James’ career spanned more than SIX plus decades and put him on the map of All Time Blues Greats! This show will feature several original band members!
The James Cotton Blues Band is Steve Freund ( Sunnyland Slim, Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley and 12 yrs w/Cotton), Tom Holland ( Eddie Clearwater, Mississippi Heat, John Primer and 15 yrs w/Cotton), Cros Charles Mack( bass for 10 yrs w/James & IBC winner) and June Core (drums w/Musselwhite , James, Robert Lockwood) plus Mark Hummel playing and singing James’s role as front man. Hummel produces The Blues Harmonica Blowouts (Mayall, Musselwhite, Huey Lewis, Lee Oskar, Magic Dick) for 30 years that featured Cotton on seven national tours as part of that event. Cotton commented “Mark is All About The Music”. Mark had a Grammy nomination in 2013, two Blues Music Awards, and 30 albums to his credit.
Join us for an evening of authentic house rockin’ blues! Montgomery based artist JOHN BULL will open for Mark Hummel!
special guest John Bull…
John Bull is a dynamic blues, jazz, and soul singer/harmonica player. John stretches the traditional boundaries of blues harmonica over all these genres. The result is a unique blend of American music that’s both uptown and lowdown.
His relaxed delivery is the result of decades spent performing at festivals, clubs, restaurants, riverboats and juke joints throughout the southeast. John teaches harmonica for the Alabama Blues Project and is a member of the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame.
